Cults and How to Avoid Them
Cult Definition
A cult is a group of people who have extreme dedication to a particular leader, ideology, or set of beliefs. The group's practices and beliefs are often seen as unconventional or outside mainstream society. Cults typically have strict rules and expectations for their members, and they can sometimes be manipulative or controlling. In some cases, cults may isolate their members from outside influences and discourage questioning.
Famous Cults
The People's Temple: Led by Jim Jones, this cult ended tragically in 1978 with the mass suicide of over 900 members in Jonestown, Guyana.
Heaven's Gate: Founded by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, this cult believed in extraterrestrial life and committed mass suicide in 1997 to reach what they thought was an alien spacecraft.
The Manson Family: Led by Charles Manson, this cult gained notoriety for a series of brutal murders in 1969, including the killing of actress Sharon Tate.
Aum Shinrikyo: A Japanese cult responsible for the 1995 Tokyo subway sarin gas attack, which killed 13 people and injured thousands.
NXIVM: A self-help organization turned cult, led by Keith Raniere, which was exposed for its abusive practices and human trafficking.
Signs of a Cult
Charismatic Leader: Often, there's a single leader who is seen as infallible and demands absolute loyalty.
Isolation: Members are encouraged or forced to cut ties with family, friends, and the outside world.
Us vs. Them Mentality: Cults often create a strong division between members and non-members, portraying outsiders as enemies.
Total Control: The group controls many aspects of members' lives, including their behavior, thoughts, and emotions.
Exploitation: Members may be exploited financially, emotionally, or even physically.
Fear and Intimidation: Cults often use fear, guilt, and intimidation to maintain control over their members.
If you ever feel like you're in a situation that matches these signs, it's important to seek help and support.
What's My purpose For Writing This Piece?
I wrote this blog because of my own personal curiosity about cults and how they are formed, but also to enlighten others on the true dangers and potential to be recruited into a cult without you even realizing or processing what's going on. I am a person who loves true crime, and the number of cult cases there are in even recent times is overwhelming. You don't realize how fragile the mind really is until it has been broken and even when it is broken you often times don't even process that you've been mentally broken. I think that it is important to shed light on things such as cults since it is extremely easy for us humans to be influenced and put into dangerous predicaments.
